Dawny’s Day Care, a children’s nursery in Addlestone Moor, is helping one of their families raise awareness of a rare developmental disorder. Vinny, who attends the setting has been diagnosed with Smith-Magenis Syndrome. This disorder means that Vinny has a severe learning delay and can cause mental and physical problems.
As this condition is so rare (only 1 in every 25,000 are currently diagnosed with it) Dawny’s Day Care want to help in every way they can because as awareness grows more people are able to be diagnosed with it and receive the care and support they need. Although Vinny has only been attending the nursery for a few months he has had a big impact on everyone who knows him and the nursery are doing all they can to support him and his family. Dawny’s Day Care have sent out an information pack to all of the families to help everyone understand his condition, have shared his very own Facebook page (Vinnie Bubs) and have close correspondence with all of his support workers. They are also currently developing a new sleep area for Vinny as he has irregular sleep patterns and can now climb out of his cot!
“We love having Vinny as part of the Dawny’s family and couldn’t imagine the nursery without him, he really is a ray of sunshine! We will do all we can to make Vinny’s time at nursery the best it can be and if we can raise awareness in the process then that’s an added bonus. We look forward to working with Vinny and his family on future projects and feel privileged to have the opportunity to help make a difference,” says Dawn Mitchell, Nursery Manager.
